St. Mary the Virgin, Saffron Walden
To provide functional, aesthetically harmonious facilities, we re-ordered the West main entrance; incorporating attractive leaflet and hymn book display and storage in bespoke English oak units; created North Aisle storage areas, using pews and existing joinery; designed North Aisle bespoke servery facilities, including a flower arranger’s sink and storage area; a South Entrance welcome area with storage; South Aisle storage areas (mirroring the North Aisle servery design, scale and arrangement), providing a children’s library; an all-person DDA/Dementia friendly WC, with baby change area.
We repositioned the Baptismal font to South-North orientation, facing the central Nave. Workmen discovered a drain and slab with signs of visible wearing. These were left, showing past font location evidence.
Ledger stones, obstructing new joinery, were neatly re-laid nearby; being distinctly visible to both aisles. Damaged ledger stones were repaired and others rediscovered.
The church won the top Diocese of Chelmsford Design Award 2019.
