Farmhouse Extension

Many properties that we encounter are former farmhouses or medium sized historic properties that require some form of extension to gain additional space.

This farmhouse is not listed but parts of it are over 100 years old. We designed a new two storey timber-framed, rendered and oak/glazed extension onto the rear of this house. The extension provides the family with a Sitting area off their Kitchen on the ground floor, with an additional Bedroom on the first floor.
We designed a cat-slide roof off to the side to create a Utility Room and Pantry. We added another cat-slide roof onto the rear, continuing the main house roof down, to provide a Study on the ground floor and a larger Bathroom, using the eaves on the first floor, with a new dormer window.

The extension was designed in close collaboration with the client, and was built conscientiously by Downham and Manser. The view out from the back of the house is of glorious open fields, so the main focus of the design was to create a beautiful oak and glazed gable end to the extension, creating a focal point to the design, but which would also take advantage of the fabulous view when looking out of the new Sitting Area and Bedroom.
