Finchingfield Guildhall

Kay Pilsbury Thomas was appointed as the Architect for the conversion and conservation of this Grade I listed C.15th Guildhall into a community building with Library, Museum and Open Hall function space.

The Guildhall project was managed by the Finchingfield Guildhall Trust, who, as a Charity, worked tirelessly since 2004. This effectively saved and brought back to life this building, which was derelict and on the At-Risk Register.

KPT Architects alongside conservation Builders, Fairhurst Ward Abbott, and other specialist craftsmen, carried out thoughtful analysis of the historic fabric and old records available, including analysis of the original daub, lime plaster and paint; to better design and conserve this beautiful building, using ingredients as near to the original as possible. The works were completed in the summer 2013. Now, for the first time in centuries, the ancient features that had been lost over time, or become hidden within the fabric of the building were discovered, and have been conserved and reinstated, revealing such features as mullioned and oriel windows, window shutters, arched headed medieval doorways, original wattle and daub, later Victorian pargetting and C.15th wall, and these have been incorporated into the new phase of the building’s life.
